Refillable Shampoo and Conditioner Bottles Make Your Shower Look Its Best

Buying refillable shampoo, conditioner and body wash bottles for your shower is great.

The whole point of them is to make your shower look like a designer spa instead of a drugstore shelf.

And if you buy your shampoo and conditioner in 12 oz bottles from the grocery store or drugstore and transfer them to my 16 oz bottles, no one will blame you.

The bottles you bought at the store are most likely decorated with bright colors meant to pop off the shelf amongst all the other shampoo bottles next to them, and you may even buy different brands of shampoo than conditioner, which makes the whole scene that much more distracting and cluttered looking.

This is the whole reason I started Bottiful Home. (Link will take you to a video about why I started the company.)

One of the side benefits of purchasing beautiful refillable shampoo and conditioner bottles is you can consider finding shampoo and conditioner that comes in refill containers instead of retail bottles.

How to Reduce Plastic Waste by Purchasing Refillable Shampoo and Conditioner Bottles

Using my refillable shampoo and conditioner bottles can help reduce your single-use plastic consumption on top of having beautiful refillable shower bottles to enjoy.

That’s a bonus for you and the environment.

This overall plastic savings only works if you can find your shampoo and conditioner from a retailer that offers large gallon jugs (which typically use less plastic than the same volume of shampoo in smaller containers) or pouches (that use less plastic than rigid bottles) or even walk-in refill stores for shampoo and conditioner. (Yes, these do exist!)

Keep in mind that not all plastic bottles are created equally, and it’s not a given that you’ll save plastic waste by purchasing pouches or gallon jugs instead of a 10 12-ounce bottles at the grocery store.

Comparing Plastic Consumption Between a Gallon Jug and a Grocery Store Bottle

I sell 16 oz refillable shampoo, conditioner and body wash bottle sets that use very little plastic compared to rigid packaging.

My 16 oz bottles weigh 1.2 ounces each when empty and without the pumps.

They’re lightweight on purpose.

You’ll be using them to place a pound of shampoo or conditioner in them.

And the last thing you need to wrangle in the shower is a heavy slippery bottle of shampoo.

I also sell 14-ounce foaming soap bottles meant for foaming hand soap beside your sink.

That bottle is made of a thicker plastic because it doesn’t need to be picked up as much and it isn’t being handled in a wet shower.

You just fill it, place it and pump it all while it sits on the counter.

That bottles weighs 2.3 ounces completely empty and without its pump.

I did some research and found an empty gallon plastic jug weighs approximately 11.7 ounces.

If you do some math, you can see that if you buy 10 of my 16 oz bottles, you get 12 ounces compared to the gallon jug using 11.7 ounces of plastic.

That’s not much of a plastic savings.

But if you’re buying thicker plastic bottles, which most grocery store versions are, then you’re probably saving plastic when buying a gallon jug of shampoo instead of several small bottles.

Comparing Plastic Consumption Between a Refill Pouch and a Grocery Store Bottle

You’re definitely saving plastic if you’re buying shampoo and conditioner in refill pouches or non-plastic methods.

According to this article by Volpak, there is about 60% less plastic in a pouch compared to a rigid bottle.

The pouches also use many fewer natural resources and transportation costs to manufacture and distribute.

Just keep in mind that plastic bottles like gallon jugs and grocery store bottles are widely recyclable in home recycling programs all over the country whereas refill pouches are not recyclable.

Those will go in the trash.

Is it still worth it to buy pouches?

That depends on what type of packaging you prefer, how you feel about recycling versus throwing things away, and whether you’re cool with doing a little better than before or you feel a need to get to zero waste.

Only you can answer those questions for yourself.

Generally speaking, the environment will be better off if you can find a large volume refill method for refilling your shampoo and conditioner…and body wash and hand soap and…you get the idea, whether that’s gallon jugs, refill pouches, or some other form of non-plastic distribution and shipping method for shampoo and conditioner refills.

Any Refill Packaging is Better Than Many Small Plastic Bottles

For the purposes of this article, I’m going to assume that any retail shampoo and conditioner that comes in a larger than usual size and is sold for the purposes of refilling your hair care products is considered an environmental savings.

And let’s not forget that buying in bulk usually means saving some money too.

Shampoo and conditioner don’t go bad really so you won’t be wasting it or throwing it away if you don’t use it right away.

How These Shampoo and Conditioner Refill Products are Ranked

I didn’t rank these products myself.

I just used the ranking from Amazon, also known as a Best Seller Ranking.

However, each individual product has its own ranking.

And some companies only offer one refill product for shampoo and conditioner, and some companies may offer several different scents plus other products like sanitizer, hand lotion or something else.

In my mind, a company that offers lots of options is going to rank higher for the category overall because they likely have a customer service department, a product development strategy, and a history of selling.

So even if there’s a single product that ranks higher than a full line of products, I will rank the full line higher because knowing what I know about selling on Amazon, I know you will get better service, options, post-purchase follow-up from a company that has been doing it a while and has a complete line than someone who just broke into the business and is testing out a single product.

Therefore, if you search for “shampoo and conditioner” refills on Amazon, you may get results for your search that are somewhat different than mine.

Also, I want to let you know that I have not tried all of these products.

So I’m not “recommending” them from the perspective of a reviewer or affiliate of these brands.

My list was developed strictly based on the data I can gather on Amazon such as reviews, pricing, packaging, brand values and product line as well as my own experience as an Amazon seller and what I know to look out for in listings, branding, etc.

And I plan to keep this kind of list as a succinct resource list for your perusal and consideration so you don’t have to type in many different searches in the Amazon search bar, like I did, to try to find what you’re looking for.

So let’s get to the fun part, shall we?
